The Church of St. Lazaros was one of the most magnificent buildings in Larnaca in medieval and modern times. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the church was surrounded by cells that hired merchants, travelers, and craftsmen. Over the years, the church has been the core of the city, around which the city's port districts have developed. After excavations carried out on the site of the temple, the remains of two earlier churches were discovered, on top of which the present church was built. Excavations at the enclosure and inside the temple have uncovered marble sarcophagi and box-shaped graves, some of which appear in the church's crypt.
